We went here on a tour in the evening and it was really cool! And they have a working gallows which you don't see every day. It's very much still mostly intact and you can see what it would've been like at various time thru go arts history.
Unfortunately less original buildings than I expected but great tour!!
Highly highly highly recommend this tour to anyone - especially skeptics! My partner and I were the only 2 on the 8PM tour (a rare occurance); however we had the most amazing (and creepy) experiences. The way the tour is run makes it all the more worthwhile - there are no theatrics, no special effects. The tour guides you through the penitentiary describing the history of the place and some recent experiences of visitors and leaves the rest to you. Both myself and my partner had a few experiences - my partner who previously was 100% this aint real isnt so sure any more. Highly, highly recommend this tour.
We went on a ghost tour at night, it was not fully dark due to sun setting late in summer. Less than 10 people went on this tour which I preferred the intimacy. I had no trouble hearing the guides and didn't miss seeing anything. The guides are friendly and make you feel welcome. The tour was informative and not cringy with fake ghost paraphernalia. You could feel the thickness of history in the air. Unfortunately I didn't have any ghostly encounters this time, I will try again next time I visit Tasmania.
Sitting amongst modern-day developments, comforts & their associated trappings, cocooned by the pungent & unpleasant scent of technological advancement, is a preserved time-capsule - Hobart Convict Penitentiary.A glimpse of "Van Dieman's Land" as a penal colony, a destination of punishment, not pleasure, another world in a different time ..... Fascinating to "view", yet there is a feeling that permeates to the bone - an icy coldness of souls long past, torture, starvation, death, fear & pain - the harshness & cruelty of life's circumstance built into every nook & cranny.......
